Nioh 2 vs Mortal Shell – The Definitive Comparison

Nioh 2 vs Mortal Shell - The Definitive Comparison

Hi guys! Today I will talk about Nioh 2 vs Mortal Shell. I will do a comparison between them and I will let you be the judge of which game is better. First I will talk about the storyline of those 2 games, then I will talk about the difference or similarities in their gameplay, and lastly, I will compare the visuals and tell you my final thoughts. Now let’s begin.

The stories of both games are pretty mediocre and forgettable in my opinion, that being said if I had to choose between the storylines of these two games I would choose the storyline of Nioh 2.

Nioh 2 had more interesting moments in the story. I never felt anything while playing Mortal Shell and watching its story unfold.

I don’t recommend that you make a decision between these two games based on the story because for me story isn’t the main reason someone buys these types of games.

These two games have several differences when it comes to combat.

Nioh 2 offers a lot more depth in its combat system. It has skill trees for ninja, onmyo, and transformation skills, you have to also add the attribute system which is similar to Dark Souls, meaning that when you gather enough currency to level up you have to put a point in one of the available attributes.

Mortal Shell has the hardening system, which don’t get me wrong, is something fresh but I think it makes the game too easy since it gives the player a way to avoid all coming damage if he knows how to use it, and it doesn’t require a lot of skill to use it effectively.

Nioh 2 just offers more quantity and quality, for example, Nioh 2 has 11 different weapons and each one of them has its own skill tree and unique playstyle. Mortal Shell offers 5 different weapons but they don’t really have depth in their playstyle.

Both games offer a variety of enemies and bosses but Nioh 2’s bosses are just more interesting to fight against and they are more.

Lastly, Nioh 2 has a lot more content, more replayability (because there are many different skills and a lot more combinations to try), is more challenging, and also offers co-op with up to 2 others, while in Mortal Shell you can only play solo.

The difference in visuals between the two games isn’t big due to the fact that they were released in the same year. Nioh 2 has better scenery in my opinion but the difference isn’t huge.

Customization is another thing to consider. Nioh 2 offers a character creation system that is detailed and you can also use it again whenever you want for the entire playthrough. Mortal Shell doesn’t have a character creation system and the players can only change “shells” in the game and each shell has different abilities so that isn’t considered customization in my opinion.

Also, Nioh 2 offers an equipment transmogrification system meaning that you are able to change the appearance of any armor or weapon you have to the appearance of another weapon or armor you have gotten in the game and keep the item’s stats.

Final Thoughts

Let me summarize what you should keep from this article.

First, when it comes to the story both games are mediocre but the story of Nioh 2 will give you some emotion I believe.

Second, Nioh 2 is far superior in every way when it comes to the gameplay and the only thing that it could do better is the way the mission system works. If Nioh 2 was semi-open world like Mortal Shell it would make the game even better.

Finally, the visuals of both games are around the same level but Nioh 2 has superior more customization options(there isn’t even a comparison).

I would strongly recommend Nioh 2 over Mortal Shell. I would recommend waiting for sale but Nioh 2 is worth the full price in my opinion.

This is it, guys. I hope you found the article informative and that I helped you decide which is the best game for you.
